Jeff Yasuda CEO of Blip.fm rocked out this interview with us and really shared some awesome insights.  Jeff has a background as a VC and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to their start-up.  Blip.fm has been featured in New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Techcrunch, Mashable and many more very influential publications.

What exactly is a ‘blip’?

A blip is a combination of 1) a song and 2) a short message that accompanies it. The way you create a blip is to first search for a song that you want to hear (or a song that you want your listeners to hear), then add a short message (under 150 characters), finally you submit it. Submitting a blip is also referred to as “blipping”, so from here on out, when you read “he blipped my favorite track” it means “he submitted a blip that had my favorite song attached”.

Jeff gives some great advice for any start-up entrepreneur discussing how & why to stay lean, community, social capital,  having multiple ways to create revenue, when & why to iterate and much more.  From a business model perspective, you’ll notice when you play a song on Blip, you may have an option to purchase that music, buy a t-shirt, or even purchase a concert ticket. The Blip.fm team is an awesome example for how start-ups need to think, strategize, operate, and succeed.  It’s also important to note that Blip.fm was actually conceived from (6) other ideas/concepts the team had worked on previously.

So, your vision of what you are creating today might actually change (and usually does, look at Twitter) so, be open, listen, act, measure, and iterate.

Jeff’s (3) tips to startups today:

1. Never run out of money!

2. Have a long enough runway
in order to make mistakes, come back to the table and be able to see the fruit.

3. Use metrics to track performance and adjust.
